RABAT- Morocco: Bernard Quintin, Belgium’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, Foreign Trade and Cultural Institutions, held talks in Rabat on Wednesday with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates Nasser Bourita.

At a press briefing following the meeting, Quintin said the talks with his Moroccan counterpart gave him a greater understanding of the Autonomy Initiative, which he considers a very good basis for a mutually acceptable solution for the issue of the Sahara. He added that he realized how this issue is of an important and existential nature for the Kingdom of Morocco.

The Belgian Foreign Minister stated that prominent European and international partners of Belgium also support this initiative, in line with his country’s backing of UN Security Council Resolution 2703, which underscores the role and responsibility of the relevant parties in seeking a realistic, pragmatic and lasting political solution based on compromise.

In a joint statement released by the Foreign Ministries of Belgium and Morocco, Belgium commended the efforts made by Morocco through various initiatives launched under the leadership of King Mohammed VI that aim to promote peace, stability and socio-economic development in Africa.

The Belgian Foreign Ministry pinpointed the Royal Initiative enabling Sahel countries to have access to the Atlantic Ocean and the Process of the Atlantic African States, underlining Morocco’s role as a viable and reliable partner, as well as a key player in bolstering regional peace, stability and cooperation.

Belgium's constructive position is part of a new international momentum that has emerged – thanks to the impetus of King Mohmmed VI – in support of Morocco's Autonomy Initiative and its sovereignty over its Sahara.
