Naoto Kan

Tokyo -- Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Naoto Kan has confirmed that he will be a candidate for party president, and thus prime minister, when DPJ party elections are held on Friday.

With such a short time between Hatoyama's resignation and the party elections, it seems difficult to imagine that any other candidate can mobilize very strong support against him.

At a large gathering held by the coalition People's New Party this evening, Hatoyama and Kan were the only two senior DPJ members to offer their greetings -- an apparent indication that Kan will simply be coroneted with no other serious contenders.

Kan, 63, has been the DPJ leader several times in the past and the party has generally done well in elections when he was at the helm.

Naoto Kan is known for having a temper and having battles with bureaucrats, but he is also a seasoned political player and probably one of the most competent and sound senior leaders of the DPJ.

Ideologically, he tends to be liberal more than conservative.
