Tokyo -- The Japanese government has decided to send a unit of GSDF helicopters to assist humanitarian efforts in flood-devastated Pakistan. The mission will consist of six helicopters and more than three hundred troops.

The advance mission of 21 GSDF troops is already heading for the region.

The Japanese mission is expected to operate in southern Pakistan where security conditions are relatively stable.

In addition to the GSDF mission, Tokyo has so far offered up to US$14.4 million in aid - a figure that is likely to rise in the coming weeks as the scale of the disaster becomes more widely appreciated.

The helicopters involved will include UH-1 utility helicopters as well as CH-47 helicopters.
