Shozaburo Jimi Appointed New Postal Minister

Tokyo -- Foregoing the opportunity to boot the People's New Party (PNP) out of the ruling coalition, Prime Minister Naoto Kan quickly bowed to outgoing minister Shizuka Kamei's demand that he be replaced by his party's secretary-general, Shozaburo Jimi.

As a result, the new postal minister has exactly the same policy stance as the old minister. The difference, perhaps, is that Jimi is a much less bombastic character than Kamei and is unlikely to be quite as outspoken and controversial.

Jimi was born in what would later become Kitakyushu City in 1945 and has a background in medical studies. He first entered the House of Representatives in 1983 as a member of the ruling LDP.

In 2005, he was pushed out of the party and the Diet by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, but he returned as a PNP candidate in the House of Councillors in 2007.

He served once before as postal minister under Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto.
