Wednesday, November 3, 2010
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan has released the following statement in regard to the meeting in Tokyo between the foreign ministers of Japan and Yemen:
On November 1 (Mon), Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Seiji Maehara held a meeting for about 25 minutes from 6:05 p.m. with H.E. Dr. Abu Bakr Abdullah Al-Qirbi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Yemen, who is visiting Japan as a distinguished guest of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).
The summary of the meeting is as follows.
At the outset, Minister Maehara welcomed Minister Al-Qirbi’s official visit to Japan, and stressed the importance Japan places on Yemen, given its location at a key point on the maritime route that runs along the coast of Somalia and its adjacency to major oil-producing countries in the Gulf region.
After handing to Mr. Maehara a letter addressed by H.E. Mr. Ali Abdullah Saleh, President of Yemen to Prime Minister Kan, Minister Al-Qirbi said that despite the number of difficult issues which Yemen faces, including terrorism, Yemen is eager to work to achieve stability, with cooperation from Japan.
Minister Maehara said that Japan will proactively support Yemen as long as it will keep up with its efforts toward stability. He expressed his intention to extend support in the area of anti-piracy measures, which are also crucial for Japan, in addition to the area of development. (END)
