Okada and Lieberman

The foreign minister's statement reads as follows:

1. Japan wholeheartedly welcomes that United States Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has, with a view to resuming the direct talks, invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to the meeting on September 2 in Washington DC and that both parties have decided to launch direct negotiations. Japan also pays its high respect for the mediating efforts made by the United States, such as those of the President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Special Envoy George Mitchell and highly appreciates the support of the Quartet for the promotion of peace.

2. Japan sincerely hopes that a two-state solution with Israel and a future Palestinian state living side by side in peace and security will be realized at earliest possible and will lead to a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in the Middle East. At the same time, Japan calls upon both parties to make sincere efforts not to undermine the peace efforts among various parties and to build mutual trust for the progress of the direct negotiations.

3. Japan continues to cooperate to the greatest extent possible for the realization of a comprehensive Middle East peace including a two-state solution.
