Tsujimoto

Tokyo -- An executive meeting of the Social Democratic Party decided today to accept former Transport Vice-Minister Kiyomi Tsujimoto's application to leave the party without imposing any symbolic parting punishment.

It is said, however, that opinions were mixed on how the issue should be handled.

Tsujimoto was one of the few SDP lawmakers who represented a district - the Osaka 10th District - rather than occupying a party proportional representation seat. This may have played a part in the SDP's decision to take a soft approach.

Also, SDP Secretary-General Yasumasa Shigeno explained that the party's decision was based in large part on the fact that Tsujimoto had made a significant contribution to the local chapter during her career as a SDP lawmaker.

Tsujimoto has now officially become an independent, but based on her own comments it seems likely that she will seize any chance to join a larger left-leaning party.

At present, that could only be the ruling DPJ, but she may also be waiting for some kind of political realignment.
