Myanmar leader declares state of emergency, seeks aid

YANGON (Myanmar): The Chairman of Myanmar’s State Administration Council Senior General Min Aung Hlaing has declared a state of emergency in all areas affected by Friday’s massive earthquake, the Myanmar News Agency reported. Speaking to the nation, Min Aung Hlaing said channels had been opened up to receive international assistance and asked for “any country or organization” to assist the citizens of Myanmar, who are in need. Min Aung Hlaing reported that three aftershocks followed the 7.7 magnitude main quake, which occurred at 12:51 on Friday. The death toll rose to over 1,000 on Saturday, according to government figures, and Min Aung Hlaing said the number of casualties is expected to rise further. He said many buildings had collapsed and rescue operations were still being carried out. Min Aung Hlaing personally visited and assessed the situation and asked the public to assist in providing aid to those affected and in need of assistance.
