Japan ``Understands`` Airstrikes in Yemen, Hadi is ``Legitimate President``
Wednesday, April 1, 2015
Tokyo- (PanOrient News) The Japanese government has given indirect support to the Saudi-led Arab Coalition airstrikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen and supports a return of U.N.-brokered negotiations in order to prevent further bloodshed and chaos.
A statement by the Foreign Ministry in Tokyo said the military action by Saudi Arabia and other countries in Yemen was taken "after the Houthi-armed groups took Sanaa, the Yemeni capital, before advancing toward Southern Yemen in pursuit of President Hadi as he fled the capital city".
The statement added that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and other countries had conducted airstrikes against Houthi installations at the request of President Hadi who legitimately represents the government of Yemen. The statement also noted that Japan understood that external military action was needed to halt further violence while the Yemeni government was unable to crack down on activities by the armed Houthi fighters.
The Japanese government further expressed in the statement that it hopes such efforts by regional states would prove successful in the de-escalation of the situation. Japan will work in coordination with the international community towards the re-opening of the UN-led political transition.
