Tokyo -- The DPJ's fortunes have just taken a major turn for the better. Facing grim prospects in July under the leadership of Yukio Hatoyama, the emergence of the Kan administration has produced a dramatic rebound in the fortunes of the ruling party.

Public opinion polls across the board are showing that the Japanese public is investing some hope that Kan can turn things around. On average, the polls show about 60% of the public taking an optimistic view of Kan's regime -- a stark contrast to the less than 20% support rate in the latter days of Hatoyama.

The support rate for the DPJ as a whole has also recovered significantly.

The Mainichi Shinbun poll, for example, finds that 34% of the people now plan to vote for the DPJ in proportional representation segment of next month's election, which is up from 22% in the previous survey.

Meanwhile, the main opposition LDP languishes, with only 17% planning to vote for the leading conservative party.

LDP lawmakers are said to be panicking about the rapid recovery of the DPJ's fortunes.

Yoshimi Watanabe's Your Party is also negatively impacted by this development.
