Tokyo -- Easy-going Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama aimed a rare criticism at the Japanese media today.
Speaking to some of his supporters from Hokkaido, he opined: "What did all of you know about Futenma just a while ago? If it has now become the matter that most concerns the people, this is because the media has become overheated about this topic."
Hatoyama continued, "Don't worry, we will certainly be able to conclude this matter. Trust me on this."
Later in the day, Hatoyama clarified that he wanted the media to handle this issue "more calmly."
Also on Friday, several members of the cabinet told reporters that they did not believe that the Futenma issue was such a grave matter that it would ever oblige the prime minister to resign.
On the other hand, national strategy minister Yoshito Sengoku stated in a TBS interview that a double election may be held in July if Hatoyama is forced to resign over the Futenma issue.
"There is a chance of a double election. In fact, logically speaking that is the way it would go," Sengoku reportedly said.
In light of the DPJ's crushing victory in the House of Representatives last August, however, it seems unlikely that Sengoku's suggestion will come to pass.
