YANGON: An official from Myanmar’s Social Welfare Ministry has refuted claims that a child was arrested after the parents were detained during a search for “assassins and their accomplices.”

Reports stated that the child had been arrested along with the parents, but the official from the Social Welfare Ministry explained that the parents had been detained for questioning and, as the child was alone, the child was taken into protective custody.

“If both the parents are detained and sentenced after questioning, the child will be sent to the Ministry of Social Welfare where they have a center called maternal and child care,” the official explained. “This is a standard practice in many other countries also.”

Human rights activists often accuse Myanmar of abuses, even targeting children, but the authorities in the country are keen to set the record straight.

When the government was accused of killing 22 schoolchildren with an air strike in the earthquake-hit region of Sagaing, evidence showed that the claims of human rights activists could not be true and photos of the alleged incident appeared to have been doctored or created using artificial intelligence.

Reports claimed the alleged air strike broke a ceasefire that was meant to last through to the end of May, following the earthquake.
