TOKYO: Spanish officials have praised Morocco's role as a strategic partner of the European Union in the fight against illegal immigration.

"Morocco is combating acts of violence perpetrated by migrants, which it also suffers from," Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez was quoted by local press as saying. He stressed that "the main ones responsible for the tragedy and unfortunate loss of life are the international mafia groups that organize violent attacks."

Concerning the attempted mass storming of the iron fence at Nador (northern Morocco), which resulted in the killing of 23 illegal immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa and the injury of 140 Moroccan security personnel, the Spanish Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for the efforts made by the members of the Moroccan public forces.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Spanish Cooperation, José Manuel Alparís, stressed that without Morocco's cooperation, it would be impossible to control illegal immigration flows, noting that "what we have to do is to improve and strengthen our cooperation with Morocco and with countries of origin and transit. Europe and the European Commission also need to be involved."

Video clips on social networks showed that large groups of illegal immigrants, armed with stones, clubs and sharp tools, attempted to storm the iron fence in Nador, causing a huge stampede and fatalities. They also violently resisted the public forces, causing many injuries, some of which were severe.
