Monday, February 1, 2016
Tokyo- (PanOrient News) Panasonic Corporation and Narita International Airport today announced that they will launch the world's first experimental demonstration of "WiGig(r) Spot", a new technology that is expected to enable high-speed wireless transmission over 10 times the data transfer rate of existing wireless LANs.
WiGig Spot will be set up in Narita airport and feature millimeter-wave access points [2], developed by Panasonic. Airport visitors will experience high-definition video download over a next-generation WLAN connection onto a dedicated terminal. The theme of the demonstration video is intended to entertain inbound tourists and show Japanese hospitality. Visitors will also receive a complimentary DVD of the video.
This experimental demonstration is supported by the "research and development project for expansion of radio spectrum resources" of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Japan.
WiGig is one of the wireless LAN standards operating at 60GHz, which is based on IEEE 02.11ad. Compared to existing wireless LANs at 2.4/5GHz, it provides a shorter communication distance (up to 10m) but enables gigabit per second high speed communication. WiGig(r) is a registered trademark of Wi-Fi Alliance(r).
