Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy displayed its latest supersonic anti-ship ballistic missile during the annual military parades in Southern Tehran on Thursday.
The smart missile, named "Persian Gulf", traverses at supersonic speed and destroys targets 300km in distance, Pars News Agency said.
Iranian military experts told Pars that 'Persian Gulf' smart missile is deemed as a step ahead in the IRGC Navy missile capability not just because of its higher velocity, but because the IRGC Navy missiles mainly belonged to the cruise class, "while Persian Gulf is a ballistic missile which flies vertically after being launched from a platform on the ground".
"Persian Gulf enjoys a combined guidance system," experts said, and explained, "Its search and targeting system locks on the target only in the final phase, giving enemy vessels no chance of escape."
The solid-fuel missile has a 650kg warhead and has been designed by the research center of the IRGC Aerospace Force and mass-produced by the Defense Ministry.
Each year, the Iranian Armed Forces display the country's latest military products in nationwide parades on September 22.
