Nissan Motor Co.'s Leaf electric vehicle won Car of the Year Japan award for 2011-2012. The award, announced during the Tokyo Motor Show, is given to the best passenger car selected from all vehicles marketed in Japan between Nov. 1 of the previous year and Sept. 30 of the current year.
The Leaf, launched last December, is Nissan's first mass-produced electric car and the company has sold about 20,000. The five-seater hatchback is powered by lithium ion batteries and has a driving range of 200 kilometers per charge.
