YANGON- Friday 12 December. 2025: Myanmar officials denied a UN report that criticized the military for carrying out airstrikes in Rakhine State on December 10th, hitting the main hospital in Mrauk-U Township. The report said at least 30 civilians were killed and over 70 others were injured, including patients, caregivers, and medical staff.

The report quoted the World Health Organization as saying that this is the 67th verified attack this year.

“Regarding the Mrauk-U Incident, it must be clarified that the military does not target hospitals or schools where civilians are present. The location in question was, in fact, a Northern Command Post of the Arakan Army (AA) terrorist group, which had been covertly established under the cover of a medical facility,” officials in Yangon told PanOrient News.

The officials remarks were based on “reliable information” from Rakhine civilian residents and intelligence sources.

“The strike targeted a fortified AA base hidden inside a hospital. After taking heavy losses, AA terrorists are again targeting the government by spreading false claims of civilian casualties.”

According to Myanmar officials, the hospital in question is in an area the AA took over after it was emptied and closed. In other words, it is no longer a hospital but just an empty building used as by the AA command post. That is why most of the dead and injured were fighters in militant uniforms, not nurses, doctors, patients, or civilians, as claimed by AA and the UN, they said.

One official, who asked not to be named, said, "The UN has its branch offices in Myanmar, and they can check the facts instead of jumping to their biased conclusions.”

The UN report, however, called on all parties to observe their obligations under international humanitarian and international human rights law. Humanitarian needs in Myanmar are soaring, it said.

The recently released 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan requests $890 million and warns that 16.2 million people, including 5 million children, will need assistance and protection next year. Fighting and disasters have already forced about 3.6 million people to leave their homes, with many having to move more than once.
