YANGON: Myanmar’s Energy Ministry says fuel is flowing into the country steadily despite reports of difficulties in supplies.

“Unscrupulous persons are spreading news of possible shortages, as neighboring Thailand has banned fuel export,” said Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun, leader of the National Defense and Security Council’s Information Team.

Within the region, Myanmar imports fuel oil from Singapore and Malaysia, which serve as regional processing and trading hubs, and they are not planning to shut down their oil refineries.

“Even if they cannot source from the Middle East, they will keep operating with the available sources,” Zaw Min Tun added. “The oil refineries are their core businesses and no disruption will occur.”

Myanmar has been consistently importing fuel oil to ensure fuel sufficiency, with two tankers docking at Thilawa Port, four en route, three in the process of loading and five waiting to load.

The Ministry of Energy says it has approximately 40 days of fuel oil in reserve. The ministry has been governing the supply chain to ensure fuel reaches end users and has drawn up plans to prevent panic buying and hoarding and to reduce fuel consumption. (PanOrient News)
