Toy Show
Tokyo -- Legions of Japanese children are now dragging their parents to the International Tokyo Toy Show, which is being held from Thursday to Sunday at Tokyo Big Sight, a major convention center along the Tokyo harbor.
The toy industry is not suffering greatly from Japan's economic recession, with sales in recent years remaining fairly stable. In 2009, the toy and game market in Japan was worth approximately US$7 billion.
The Japan Toy Association notes that it is a traditional adage that the toy industry is "immune to economic slumps," and the current sales figures seem to be bearing out the old wisdom.
The growth area in the toy market has been centered on boys' movie character toys and jigsaw puzzles, the latter having gained popularity among young women.
Well over a hundred exhibitors are holding displays at the Toy Show, most of them Japanese companies, but many from overseas as well.
There are also a number of floor shows featuring popular characters and dancing.
Tomorrow is the final day.
