Bahrain`s Independent Commission of Inquiry Report Welcome: Japan

Friday, November 25, 2011

Tokyo- (PanOrient News) Japan today welcomed the submission of a report by Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI) to King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa on Wednesday, November 23, concerning the government's response to the protests in February and March of this year, which was simultaneously made public.

A statement by the Foreign Ministry in Tokyo said Japan closely observes King Hamad's resolve to organize a governmental working group to promptly consider the recommendations set out in the report, following his announcement regarding his commitment ensuring that the same incident will never be repeated.

Japan expects that the Government of Bahrain will swiftly implement the recommendations of the report and that substantial progress will be made in reforming the country, the statement said.

The BICI was appointed by King Hamad Al Khalifa, and headed by a respected international lawyer who has worked for the UN.

The five-member team was asked to investigate whether the events of last February and March - in which up to 40 people died - "involved violations of international human rights law and norms".

Anti-government protesters have been staging demonstrations in Bahrain since mid-February, demanding political reforms and a constitutional monarchy.
