Japan to Finance Training of Afghan National Police Officers in Turkey

Tokyo- (PanOrient News) The Japanese government decided to contribute 3 million US dollars to a training program in Turkey for approximately 500 candidates of Afghan National Police officers, the Foreign Ministry said in Tokyo.
This assistance is part of Japan's pledge to provide up to around 5 billion US dollars within about 5 years to support Afghanistan, according to a statement issued by the ministry.
The training program aims to contribute to the development and capacity building of the Afghan police maintaining security in Afghanistan. The training will start on July 25, 2011, in "Sivas Police Training Center" in Sivas, Turkey, and will last for six months.
Japan is planning to dispatch six police officers (Judo trainers) to Turkey as JICA short-term experts in order to provide Judo training to candidates of Afghan Police officers from July 25 to October 7, 2011.
It is expected that this cooperation with Turkey will have a beneficial impact on the urgent task of improving the security situation in Afghanistan, the statement said.
