Japan Denounces Israeli Construction Plans for the West Bank

Tuesday, August 28, 2018

Tokyo- (PanOrient News) Japan ‘deeply deplores’ Israeli plans to construct more than 1,000 homes in settlements in the West Bank. It also branded Israel as a country violating international law and blocking the Middle East peace process.

“Settlement activities are in violation of international law and Japan has repeatedly called upon the Government of Israel to fully freeze settlement activities,” said a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo.

The statement came on Monday, following Israel's recent approval of the construction plans.

The Japanese government is urging Israel to halt all settlement activities, including the new planned housing units, and says that they undermine the viability of a two-state solution.

Israelis have been moving into scattered communities around the West Bank since the 1960’s, complicating prospects for a future two-state agreement between Israel and Palestine. It has been reported that most of the new homes would be built in isolated settlements that would have to be evacuated if a peace agreement was ever reached.
