The Japanese government has strongly deplored Israel’s announced intention to expropriate nearly 4 square kilometers of land in the southern part of the West Bank.

A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo issued on September 3 said the Israeli government’s announcement "clearly contradicts the ongoing efforts by the international community toward a ceasefire agreement over Gaza as well as realizing a two-state solution."

Israel's continued expansion of settlements is a violation of international law, the Japanese government said, noting that Japan has repeatedly called on Israel to completely freeze settlement activities.

Tokyo "strongly" called for Israel to refrain from any unilateral act that changes the current status of East Jerusalem as well as the West Bank and to refrain from implementing the announced expropriation for the sake of progress in the peace process, the statement said.
