Mazda's High-Efficiency and High-Compression SKYACTIV-G Gasoline Engine Honored

Tokyo- (PanOrient News) Mazda Motor Corporation was honored at the 9th New Japan Society for Promotion of Machine Industry (JSPMI) awards presentation. Mazda said it has received the New JSPMI prize from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry for its development of the highly efficient SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine that achieves an ultra-high compression ratio.

The New JSPMI prizes are given to organizations such as companies, universities and research institutes and their researchers for outstanding contributions to the progress and growth of the machine industry through research, development and commercialization of their achievements. The Minister's prize from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is granted to the most remarkable achievement.

The SKYACTIV-G engine achieves the world's highest compression ratio for a regular gasoline mass production automobile engine of 14.0:1, resulting in a fuel efficiency and engine output improvement of 15% compared to existing models. The engine started to be installed in new models in 2011 and delivers excellent fuel economy and responsive driving performances.

Achieving a high compression ratio for conventional gasoline engines has been considered difficult due to the resulting abnormal combustion, known as "knocking". Mazda said it discovered that low-temperature oxidation reaction (in which the bonds within the molecules of fuel break and produce energy) occurs before ignition when the compression ratio is high, and the reaction leads to knocking reduction and output increase. Utilizing this reaction, Mazda successfully developed the SKYKACTIV-G gasoline engine.

The engine also features a number of new combustion technologies, such as piston cavities that are specially designed to support ideal combustion and multi-hole injectors that enable precise fuel injection. Analysts say Mazda's achievement was highly acclaimed with this recognition for significant improvement in internal combustion efficiency with a focus on improving performance of an internal combustion engine that is expected to remain the primary source of power for automobiles for the foreseeable future.
