Thursday, January 12, 2012

Cairo- (PanOrient News) France 2 television journalist Gilles Jacquier was killed in the Syrian city of Homs on Wednesday, the first reported instance of a Western journalist being killed in 10 months of Syrian unrest.

In a statement Wednesday, the channel said the reporter, Gilles Jacquier, was on an Syrian government-authorized reporting trip at the time of his death.

Syria’s Interior Ministry acknowledged that an incident involving foreign journalists had taken place in Homs, which is one of the centers of protest against the regime of Bashar al-Assad, but said it had no details.

Syrian Addounia TV announced on Wednesday that “eight people, including a Belgian journalist, were killed and more than 25 others were wounded in armed terrorist groups’ attacks targeting a march supporting President Bashar al-Assad in Homs.”

“The journalists were near the Akrama al Nuzha neighborhood when they were reportedly hit by grenades or rocket fire that targeted a march supporting President al-Assad in the district,” the pro-Syrian government Addounia TV said.

Opposition activists, meanwhile, have accused the authorities of being behind the attack, and French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe condemned the killing of journalist Gilles Jacquier and demanded that the circumstances of his death be investigated.
